Charles Nix Biography

Charles Nix, smooth jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn specialist, out of the fertile musical ground of Atlanta, GA, has a sound that has been described as melodic, fresh and smooth.  With years of experience on the music scene in Atlanta and most recently with the smooth jazz group “m2o”, he is more than ready to debut his first solo project, “Snapshot”.  With the help and direction of guitarist Peter Moore at the production helm, this offering is sure to please smooth jazz audiences everywhere.

Charles began playing trumpet at the tender age of 9.  He began playing in local R&B bands at Atlanta area clubs and dances at age 11.  While in high school he got his first taste of jazz and participated in the highly competitive All-State Jazz ensemble two years in a row.  After high school he received a scholarship to Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) where he was immersed into serious jazz studies under Joe Jennings and Dr. James Patterson in the world-renown Clark College Jazz Orchestra.  It was at Clark where he met Jody Mayfield and Heidi McLaughlin who would in later years form the nucleus of m2o.  From then on, it was jazz that kept his attention musically, even with all the other significant musical influences at the time, and there were many.

In the late seventies his bands toured and opened concerts for the likes of James Brown, The Barkays, Millie Jackson and Donald Byrd and the Black Birds.  Most recently, with “m2o”, he has performed on concerts with Pieces of a Dream, Najee and Morris Day and the Time.  In the studio Charles has also been called upon to lend his talents to hip-hop producers, Jermaine Dupri and Organized Noize.  His horn section provided that captivating hook on TLC’s Grammy-nominated “Waterfalls”.  But his best work can be heard in the “m2o” catalog where his smooth sound on the flugelhorn and trumpet really shines.  “Snapshot” is just a natural occurrence in the evolution of Charles’ career and is sure to be a musical treat for audiences everywhere.
